Chapter 1: The Remembrance
The images in Chapter 1: The Remembrance were the first images I made in the series, "My Brother's War" which, subsequently turned into chapters. I chose to work with black and white film. I had no idea how far I would go with the work or even if I would be able to hold up emotionally to finish it. After the first week of photographing, it became easier.
My first impulse was to photograph Gary's letters and belongings, made in-camera from the point of view of my childhood memory. I intuitively chose and juxtaposed the objects in the photographs and was often surprised at the unanticipated results.
Our father, Lee Granger Hines, made the drawings of battle when he was a child during World War I.
I thought I would finish the project here, with these images in Chapter 1. But there were still far too many unanswered questions to stop there. Little did I know what was to follow.
Work from this series is available for purchase, licensing, and exhibition.
