Chapter 4: The Beginning/The Mystery
Late one night, after I finished reading Gary's letters, I thumbed through his Vietnamese/English dictionary. There, scattered randomly amongst the pages, were messages of love written to him from the woman with whom he had fallen in love. I think that the two of them were learning to speak the other's language. I have never been able to find out her identity and can only guess at who she was. I have her first name - but with no last name, she is virtually impossible to trace. She is a mystery that I will probably never solve. Just the same, I can't help but imagine who she was and who she might have become, provided that she survived the war.
In this chapter, are the photographic "memories" I have created for myself in my attempt to understand what happened to my brother -- how the story began and how it ended in this mystery.
